With ten million members, Solidarity had survived under the leadership of Walesa against the Soviet-controlled regime in Warsaw. The Gdansk monument honors strikers killed in 1970. The Gdansk agreement which created the independent unions in Aug. 1980, keeps the Soviets nervous because Solidarity has become the third largest power center in Poland.
