As Anwar Sadat reviewed hundreds of troops and equipment, shortly after saluting the unknown soldier of the 1973 war, the end began. Scrambling from the back of a truck passing in review, a band of Moslem religious fanatics flinging grenades and firing submachine guns attacked Sadat and the crowd. Sadat fell, mortally wounded.
