The story of Stevie Jacques is the story of how a little boy copes with effects of his disfigurement. It it not the story of a burn victim. The fire that scorched his body happened eight years ago when he was an infant. Without the aid of his brother, he would have been killed in the blaze that tore through his crib. Now he struggles against other children and even adults who shun him. Moreover, Stevie tries hard to be normal and fit in with the other children, especially those in his neighborhood. He holds onto one of the many friend he has made around his apartment complex, his cat Pinky. Although the cat was soft and lovable, Stevie’s mother became allergic to his best friend and they had to get rid it.
