East St. Louis, impoverished and neglected, has been called America's Soweto, and the city's school system has been similarly ravaged. Shannon protested the school's financial mismanagement and corruption after having been denied sufficient money for his football program. He was fired from his coaching job and the locks to his office were changed as he looked on.
