Caption/Description
A refugee mother cries into the shoulder of her child after reaching safety in Austria. The woman knew nothing of her husband, who had joined the rebels for the fight for independence from Russian rule. In Budapest alone, an estimated 20,000 Hungarians were slain by the Soviets. More than 10,000 had escaped, leaving behind homes, possessions and loved ones.
