Hundreds of thousands of New Orleans residents chose not to evacuate as Hurricane Katrina steered east from the city, bringing along with it many of the rescue effort. As the sun rose over downtown, it revealed that two of the main levees had broken as a result of the hurricane - flooding the majority of the city and destroying many neighborhoods.
