Underground, in a 3 1/2 -foot 'low coal' operation such as this one in the mountains near Vansant, Va., coal miners mostly works on their hands and knees, crawling like an infant. They spend the entire shift, sometimes 12 hours or more, without ever standing up. 'A Dark Addiction'
