Mrs. Shaneera Smith, 33, is an uninsured breast cancer survivor. Her quest for proper diagnosis and treatment of Triple-negative breast cancer, a subtype of breast cancer characterized by its unique molecular profile, aggressive behavior and lack of targeted therapies, took months of pleading with doctors to see her and agonizing about how to make payment. With help from Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment program, Shaneera had a mastectomy in June 2008 and is now cancer free.
