State troopers stand with guns at the ready as 'freedom marchers' scatter after tear gas was hurled into their tent site by the police late June 23. Some 100 troopers, armed with riot guns, billy clubs, and gas masks, tossed the gas bombs when the marchers tried to pitch a tent on the grounds of the McNeil Elementary School in Canton, Miss.
