After months of constructing the refuge, Pat Derby is relieved that Mara and 71 have a place of their own. A refuge very similar to their home in Africa.
Mara looks over a wall of bamboo in the reserve set up by members of PAWS. Elephants like to rub their bodies against bamboo and trees which in several zoos in the U.S. are not provided.
Pat brings 71 her dinner with an impatient 71 trying to steal a trunk-full of food. Pat feeds Mara and 71 everything from carrots, apples, oranges, oats and hay.
Elephants greet each other by putting their trunks in each others mouths. And the closest thing for Pat to greet Mara with is by blowing on her tongue to Mara's delight.
