Caption/Description
Forty-one sperm whales beached themselves on the Oregon coast. But about a dozen members of Greenpeace felt they had to try to save them from their fate. Attempting to use manpower to pull the whales back out to sea, they looped ropes around their flukes and heaved. But the whales could not be budged. Most of the whales died.
