Caption/Description

It was not clear from where the shooting began, from the ruling right or the radical left. Shots rang out among 50,000 people gathered at the funeral of Archbishop Romero who had been assassinated. The mourners fled leaving 35 dead. In the aftermath lay crushed bodies, shoes, leaflets, and pictures of the archbishop. The cathedral was used as a morgue.
