A revolt in the West African republic of Liberia against a small group of ruling elite, descendants of American slaves, began with the assassination of the 66-year-old president, Will R. Tolbert in Monrovia. Soldiers seized, shot and disemboweled Tolbert. Five days later three others were publicly executed on an Atlantic beach in Monrovia.
