May 18, 1980. At 8,32 a.m. picturesque Mt. St. Helens, located in central Washington state, erupted with a force greater than an atomic bomb. The blast and resulting ash fall left 69 killed or missing and a path of destruction 8 miles long and 15 miles wide. Searches for victims and survivors, conducted by National Guard helicopter crewmen uncovered bodies.
