John and Jeanie Anderson brought their son Charlie into this world on Nov. 20, 1981. Shunning the cold, anesthetizing world of hospitalization, they chose to share the experience with the aid of a midwife in their home. Jeanie rests between contractions in the living room of their California home. Their family dog Simon rests nearby.
