Overcome with emotion, Marilyn Johnson, mother of Nevell Johnson, Jr., told by doctors that her son would not live. Johnson was shot by Miami Police officer Luis Alvarez. After the shooting, the Overtown residents began a violent demonstration. Many black residents, mainly youths, cars on fire and confronted police with gun fire.
