On Nov. 12, 1982, thousands of Vietnam veterans gathered in Washington DC to dedicate the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and to mourn their fallen friends. The names of 57,939 who paid the ultimate price are inscribed on the polished black granite walls. Relatives placed flowers and portraits at the wall, while old comrades wept and embraced.
