Caption/Description
The Byzantine tradition lives on today in orthodox monasteries throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. The monastery, Roussanou, crowns a hilltop at Meteora, Greece. Originally, these monasteries were built like fortresses and situated in inaccessible places in order to protect them from the attacks of Arab pirates, crusaders and marauding Turks.
