Every helicopter that could be found was used in the rescue effort. They would pluck people from the mud and dangle them from ropes 80 feet in the air before setting them down on makeshift landing pads. This boy was pulled from the muck and taken to the nearby town of Guayabal by helicopter, where he received medical care. He survived, but lost his leg.
