As rapidly as Florida is building its future, it is losing its past. Some of Florida's greatest buildings have been grossly neglected, some beyond recognition. Florida's architectural legacy is being threatened by forces rarely beyond our control. Far too many hammocks and streams have been lost. Gone are the homes of presidents, industrialists and literary giants. Also endangered are subtle, small buildings and landscapes that give Florida its charm--quaint beach cottages, old tourist attractions, fishing piers. lighthouses and beautiful canopy roads. Here, cottages along Florida's coastline are slowly being crowded out by high-rise condo developments.
