Caption/Description

After a decade of efforts to reform California's nursing homes, incidents of neglect and virtual abuse still continue to surface. Since 1984, poor care has been the cause of 52 deaths and has contributed to 74 others. Over 106,000 people inhabit California's convalescent homes. Forcing the elderly to live under the appalling conditions of many of the nation's nursing homes is tragic. With medical science extending life expectancy more everyday, the nursing home population continues to grow. Here, empty stares from the eyes of the elderly such as Florence LeParis fill the corridors of California's nursing homes.
