Illegal drugs have become so pervasive and commonplace in offices, factories, retail stores, in virtually every workplace in America that companies are starting to fight back. Their presence on the job is affecting performance, productivity, reliability and sapping the life out of the workers, even as competition from foreign companies is growing tougher. Supervisors are watching employees more closely, companies are setting up programs to counsel those with problems, resorting to urinalysis to detect the presence of drugs, and even installing hidden cameras or hiring undercover agents to detect drug abuse.
