Story Summary, After many years of dictatorial and despotic rule, Gen. Auguste Pinochet agreed to a referendum on his rule which has existed since the assassination of Salvador Allende. Gen. Pinochet's agreement was precipitated by the pressure of the opposition. This was not an election for a new government, but simply a referendum on whether democratic elections should be held in 1989. The result, a dramatic and overwhelming 'si' vote and a defeat for General Pinochet. Caption, Santiago, Chile.
