Without Section 8 money $400 of her $600 welfare check was going for rent. So Christy aggressively searches for a home. She spends the entire 8 weeks looking for a place and finds three she likes and would be able to afford--all are rejected by HUD for reasons as varied as having lead paint or not having enough room for five children.
