Tbilisi, Georgia, As rivial armed bands played out a civil war on a once beautiful downtown avenue, this former Soviet republic became the nightmare scenario for life after communism. Last May, an overwhelming majority voted Zviad Gamsakurdia, a former dissident, into office as President. Eight months later, he was forced to hide out in an underground bunker in the Parliament building while the fighting intensified between his loyal supporters and the opposition forces. Rebel forces fighting to oust Georgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia.
