the Washington D.C.-based Satchel Paige Little League is the only league in the country that bears the name of the great pitcher of the Negro League and later the Cleveland Indians. But even with this badge of honor, the eight teams in the league face the adversities that other inner-city organizations must face. Lack of funding and sub-standard playing facilities are many times the norm for these groups. But despite the obstacles, the children of the Satchel Paige Little League learn the lessons of teamwork, commitment, and tenacity. They strengthen existing friendships, build new ones and then rub elbows with adults who are willing to give them the guidance, support and attention that their age group needs. In the process, they might have little fun. before the national anthem is played to open up another season for the handful of teams that make up the Satchel Paige Little League, a mother helps her youngster get neat for his on field appearance.
