Caption/Description

Thousands of Nicaraguans perished from the rushing wall of water, mud and debris that barreled down hillsides in the Central American country. Many people lost family members, homes and livestock. All were left with the task of picking up the pieces of a country that survived the worst natural disaster in history of the region. The waters took days to subside and the scars left by the death toll will last forever. But Nicaraguans carried on. The world answered the call for help with aid of every type. The people burned and buried their dead and rebuilt makeshift cities out of wood and plastic sheets where their children could once again feel the safety the only community can bring. The father and grandmother of the 12 year-old Nicaraguan boy killed by mudslides caused by Hurricane Mitch embrace with grief during the child's funeral procession in Chinandega, Nicaragua.
