Caption/Description
The colors and shapes of coral reef fishes have puzzled scientists and inspired artists ever since Darwin and other explorers returned from voyages of explorations with tall tales and hand-colored sketches. Viewed from typical distances by divers and photographers, these animals are beautiful and bizarre enough to inspire hyperbole. viewed through the closeup lens of macrophotography their intricacy of color and texture, pattern and form, are beyond extraordinary. And explained by a century's worth of scientific observation and experimentation, each image becomes a lesson in the endless creativity and idiosyncrasies of the evolutionary process. Gill and pectoral fin of Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus Ciliaris). Bahamas - Caribbean.
