Caption/Description

While sociologists wrestle with demographics of “white flight” from America’s inner suburbs, on one New Jersey street blacks and whites have lived alongside one another for more than fifty years. Not only have they lived in harmony, but their lives and families are forever woven. The latest generation may just be colorblind. Here are everyday scenes from Martin Road in Verona, NJ., starting with their annual block party. Block Party, 20000909JN 1/12 Martin RD. Chuck Armstead lovingly rubs the head of neighbor Paul Fulton, 12, after the twelve year old beat him in a game of chess during the annual block party on Martin Road. Just to the right of Mr. Armstead is his next door neighbor, Sean DeYoung. Foreground right are neighbors Michael Unis, David Oster, and Todd Wilson.
