Aboard the liner S.S. United States, John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers Union, watches as the giant ship docks without the aid of tugboats at Pier 86. The ship was forced to make it alone because of the week-long tugboat strike. Lewis is returning from Europe where he studied the Foreign Aid Program along with other prominent Americans.
