The fire inside the Kanungu church burned hot but did not spread beyond the humans it consumed. The rafters supporting the tin roof collapsed. The boards nailed over the windows burned as well. But the doors survived the blaze, and the mud walls were only lightly scorched when, only days after the fire, a bulldozer pushed the entire building into a freshly dug trench that served as a mass grave.
