Dumps may provide copious and reliable sources of food, but they also pose hazards. Birds can be sickened or killed by eating toxic or indigestible refuse, or trapped by windblown plastic. (The photographer later freed this bird.) Ironically, the landfills also threaten white storks because the birds have become dependent on them. Spain plans to compost organic waste and clean up dumps, a change that many fear may leave birds hungry.
