Caption/Description
A reindeer team pulling sleds sleds packed with supplies gets ready to plunge into a swollen stream on Siberia's Yamal Peninsula, located above the Arctic Circle, during a snow storm at midnight June 9-10 2003. The reindeer move northwards on their 1,000 mile migration route every year. Nenets people move as these reindeer move, and depend on the animals for all their food, shelter, clothing and transport. Nenets men spend most of the day outdoors in order to keep the welfare and migration of the animals in tact. The men track changes in habitat, food supply and ecology which may affect the reindeer's homeland and the Nenets livlihood. Here, a man lights a cigarette before getting ready to help teams cross the river.
