Most of the time Pepper is proud of Blondie and their nine offspring. Here, however, 'the old man' is figuratively in the dog house because he has pilfered an extra pan of milk intended for the ever-hungry puppies. Hurt by the ostracism meted out, Pepper cannot look reproachful Blondie in the eye.
