Caption/Description
The Afghan people live their lives as they always have done through their history , at once both the victims and ultimate survivors of their own fate. A villager returning home with timber supplied by an NGO helping in the reconstruction of the Shamali Plain. The Plain is one of the most dramatic examples of reconstruction in Afghanistan. In the '80s, the mujahhidin fought the Soviets here, and throughout the late '90s the Northern Alliance troops of Ahmed Shah Massoud battled the Taliban, advancing and retreating and advancing again creating a cauldron of war that devastated agriculture, houses and lives.
