Summary, In October 2005 a powerful quake, lasting a short four seconds, shook the Kashmir region and spread across Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. In all 73,000 people died, half of them school children crushed in their classrooms, hundreds of thousands were injured, and 3.5 million were left homeless in the region's high altitudes fearing the coming winter. Caption, An injured Pakistani woman, who was pulled from the rubble, is carried on a bed through the town of Balakot, Pakistan October 11, 2005.
