Caption/Description

Memunatu Mansaray holds a sign at a protest in NYC against 'conflict diamonds” as Bintu Amara stands on her crutch. Rep. Tony P. Hall joined human-rights activists and victims of Sierra Leone's diamond wars for a protest highlighting the role American consumers are unwittingly playing in funding some African wars. They marched to Cartier Jewelers on 5th Avenue to demonstrate and hand out leaflets aimed at educating consumers about this blood trade. Memunatu and Bintu Amara are victims of rebel atrocities in Sierra Leone. They are in the US for artificial limbs donated by a Staten Island prosthetist, Dr. Matthew Mirones.
