Caption/Description
For most of human history, the phrase 'light pollution' would have made no sense. Now most of humanity lives under intersecting domes of reflected, refracted light. Our world pays a price for this loss of night. Reducing the size and impact of night lighting is relatively easy and inexpensive. Here we see the time-honored night light -- one fire and countless stars -- illuminating a farmer and his companions near his land in Burkina Faso in West Africa.
