As is the case in far too many conflicts the civilian population bore the brunt of the fighting through casualties and being uprooted from their homes. Those that fled Gori eventually returned to their homes about two weeks after the fighting stopped, but for those Georgians that lived in South Ossetia, they remain displaced. A truckload of villagers make their way down the road to Tbilisi after evacuating their homes. Russian troops remain in South Ossetia to this day.
