A man drives an old Soviet Lada away from Shege, a village near the south Aral Sea in Uzbekistan whose water supply has dwindled as a result of excessive diversion of water from the Amu Darya river for cotton farming upstream. The economy of the Aral Sea region has crumbled as the environment has deteriorated.
