A defecting East German soldier leaped across barbed wire separating East and West Berlin. Editors hailed it as the most dramatic picture of the Berlin crisis, which had just reached new heights of intensity as the Communists sealed East Berlin borders to stop the exodus of East Germans into the free atmosphere of West Berlin.
