This decoration has gone from the ground up, President Kennedy tells spaceman Alan Shepard Jr. after dropping Distinguished Service Medal. NASA director James Webb retrieves medal for Chief Executive. He dropped the medal, then recovered and handed it to Shepard. Mrs. Kennedy tactfully suggested he might pin it on, and JFK did his duty.
