RICHMOND HEIGHTS, OHIO, 2008. In the late afternoon, when the weather is good, Gail wheels Shurvon outside, where he enjoys the company of his nieces and nephews. “A young man Shurvon’s age,” Gail laments, “should be dating girls, cooling off with the guys. I’m supposed to be yelling at him, ‘Put gas in my car; you used my car.’ Now I look at what is going on with the war, I look at him, and ask, ‘What have we gained? What did it do for us?’
