A handful of aides stand at the ready while Afghan President Hamid Karzai carries on a conversation with the governor of Kandahar province in his private offices. Often derided as the 'Mayor of Kabul' instead of leader of the nation, Karzai struggles to build a stable democracy on a foundation of war, corruption, foreign interference and religious extremism.
