The Afghans: An infant democracy

An Afghan National Army recruit exercises at a training center on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan. About one thousand new recruits come out of the center each month adding to an army that is currently 30,000 strong. High desertion rates, lack of discipline and total reliance on Americans for supplies and support has hindered what is hoped will be a unifying institution for the country.
