Hunting Whales in the Azores

The photographer spent three weeks in a remote village in the Azores, where he joined a crew of whalers for the chase. The 38-foot boat pulls up within inches of the 50-foot-long leviathan, and the harpooner hurls his lance. Only after repeated piercings does blood burst through the animal's blow hole in a 'red flag'. The whale being flensed.
