After the funeral director left, I looked at the empty bed and for the first time it hit me, the ordeal was finished. I felt no overwhelming sense of relief that Gramp was gone, instead, a tinge of emptiness, a feeling that we would miss the craziness he brought into our lives--but, most of all, I felt an enormous amount of respect for this tough old coal miner.
