Caption/Description
Slash-and-burn is a forest rangers term, one used to describe a method of burning over arable land so that it can be used for agricultural purposes. The fire itself backlights this stand of second-growth trees--and it is that quality of light, and the ethereal atmosphere it produces, that the judges most liked about the photograph.
