Caption/Description
Before their arrival sponge fishing had been done from a boat, with long sticks used to spear the prey one at a time. The Greek émigrés changed all that. Wearing 200-pound diving suits, they plunged 120 feet below the sea's surface and harvest the black, jelly-like sponges. This is a series of photographs on sponge fishing.
