Caption/Description
The Amoco Cadiz, 229,000 deadweight tons, crashed on the rocks off the coast of Brittany. About 69 million gallons of oil spilled from her wrecked carcass, washing up on the French coast damaging resort beaches and putting an abrupt stop to the local fishing economy. The French government called up the army and volunteers to clean up the oil spill.
